"SAN ANGELO - The 170,000-sf megafacility on the outskirts of San Angelo has its first completed section of a wind turbine tower.

“We've got five towers, or 20 sections, in production right now," said Richard Phillips, president of Martifer-Hirschfeld Industries.

A little more than $22 million in tax incentives and abatements from the city, county, state and other entities helped entice the Portugal-based manufacturing giant to settle in San Angelo for its North American presence.

At the end of 2010, there were about 25 workers employed at the plant, and there are now approximately 95, with more being sought.

"The economy went south on them, but now they are posting jobs again. They are a much-needed boost to the local job market," said Cathy Ballard, planning director of the Concho Valley Workforce Development Board.
