Located in the region of El Tarf, this plant will generate 18% of all the electric power consumed in Algeria

The commissioning of the Koudiet plant has been one of the most complex projects of this kind ever undertaken by the IBERDROLA subsidiary, in terms of both the scale of the construction works and the logistic, security and design difficulties
IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA has completed the commissioning of the Koudiet combined cycle plant in Algeria, after switching on the third unit of this large generation facility, which totals a capacity of 1,200 megawatts (MW).
The Company has carried out this project in partnership with General Electric, under a 1,470 million contract awarded by SKD, a corporation set up by Sonelgaz and Sonatrach, the Algerian gas and electricity and hydrocarbon companies. The agreement included the design, equipment procurement, construction and assembly of the plant.
Koudiet is a gas-steam combined cycle plant consisting of three units, each with a capacity of 400 MW. The facility will supply energy to nearly four million people in Algeria, representing 18% of the country's total electricity consumption.
This plant, for which construction started in 2008, is located in the town of Koudiet Edrauch, 40 kilometres from Annaba, the third largest city in the country, in the northern region of El Tarf.
Its coming into operation is a major step toward achieving Algeria's ambitious goal of generation through gas, which according to its 2012-2017 strategic plan includes the production of around 10,000 MW using this energy source.
Koudiet has been one of the most ambitious and complex generation projects ever undertaken by IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA, in terms of both its scale and the logistic, security and design difficulties.
Among other things, the Company had to set up an operations base next to the plant where the workers have lived during construction work, as well as a specific customs area to supervise the arrival of all the goods: 99% of the plant's components have been imported.
The IBERDROLA subsidiary also had to build several roads and bridges to carry the materials for the combined cycle facility. These infrastructures include the world's largest bridge for transporting heavy goods, erected over the river Al Wadi Al Kabir, which is 65 metres long and can support up to 500 tons.
The Company also built two large demineralised water and diesel oil tanks, each with a capacity of 28,000 square metres. The latter provides six days of oil supply, as an alternative to gas. Thanks to this, the Koudiet plant is self-sufficient in terms of energy production, something very rare in this type of facilities.
Lastly, its distinct design is the result of the characteristics of the terrain on which it was built. Worth mentioning among these constraints is the construction of a platform of nearly 5,000 square metres reclaimed from the sea.
