Development and Launching of a fuel: e-diesel

Since 2005, Abengoa Bioenergía Nuevas Tecnologías (ABNT) has been working successfully on several bioethanol-based biofuel projects
One of the fuels developed in this line of work is e-diesel, a blend of bioethanol and diesel capable of improving the efficiency of engines as well as decreasing the consumption of fossil fuel and increasing the consumption of renewable energies. Since November 2007 various fleets throughout Europe have been testing this new fuel, the Seville Public Transport Service, TUSSAM amongst others.
Laboratory tests
Before a fleet of vehicles can test a new fuel, various trials have to be carried out in a laboratory to ensure suitable behavior of the fuel.
The e-diesel used in vehicles is a stable blend in all circumstances. Nevertheless, bioethanol and diesel tend to separate naturally in the same way as water and oil, but this can be corrected by using additives. It is therefore necessary to control the quality of the fuel because contamination by water could cause a separation in the blend.
ABNT has developed various blends of bioethanol, diesel and stabilizing additive which remain stable in any climate or at any time of year. The formulation of this biofuel changes adapting itself throughout the year in the same way as commercial diesels and gasoline. At present ABNT is working on trying to achieve fuels with a higher renewable content by adding biodiesel to the blends.
Before introducing a new fuel on the market it has to be tested in all different types of engines. E-diesel has been tried with all existing fuel injected engines (rotary pumps, aligned pumps, common rail and injection pumps) and with all different types of engines (Light duty, heavy duty, off road etc.). The results have been satisfactory.
Once the tests in the laboratory have been completed the fuel is then demonstrated in public.
Development of a logistics system
Before testing a fleet of vehicles a logistics system adapted to the needs of the fuel has to be developed. The steam pressure of bioethanol is higher than that of diesel but lower than that of petrol and, therefore, the construction of a bioethanol tank has to be carried out following the same criteria as for petrol tanks. Moreover, ABNT has pursued integration of an additional value aimed at sustainability and respect for the environment via the use of Dry Lock systems.
Normally on re-fuelling at filling stations, the petrol tank is filled with liquid fuel whilst fuel vapors are lost into the atmosphere. This effect is clearly visible when filling petrol vehicles during the summer. These fuel vapors are known as Volatile Organic Compounds and are precursors to the formation of tropospheric ozone.
ABNT has developed a system, commercially known as Dry Locks, which enables recovery of all these vapors, thereby decreasing their impact on the environment. This means
e-diesel can be considered an almost zero VOC emissions fuel.
