Income-oriented green investors might also consider shares of US EcologyNasdaq" PRIMARY="NO"/>. The company provides radioactive- and hazardous-waste management and disposable services to both the government and industry. It is active across a wide range of industries, including chemical plants, utilities, steel mills and biomedical plants. The stock yields a very comfortable 4.5%.
Its earnings should rise this year, as stimulus funds earmarked for environmental cleanup projects are released. The balance sheet is solid, with almost no long-term debt and more than $32 million in cash. The company is expanding its refinery business, which should add to the bottom line, as the economy begins to recover this year. Again, I would look to buy the shares on a pullback in the overall market.
Although I understand the desire to have a green portfolio, I am more concerned with a bottom line written in black ink. Much of the excitement about green stocks swirls around companies that are highly speculative and very expensive on fundamental measures. I prefer to rely on companies that engage in the cleanup of the environment and have long operating histories to gain green exposure. Fuel-Tech is about as speculative as I am willing to get with my money. For the most past, I believe exposure to green stocks is best gained from solid dividend-paying companies such as Waste Management and US Ecology.
