Cereplast CEO Appointed as SPI BioPlastics Council Chair

Press Release Source: Cereplast, Inc. On Wednesday January 13, 2010, 6:00 am EST

HAWTHORNE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cereplast, Inc. (OTCBB:CERP - News), manufacturer of proprietary bio-based sustainable plastics, announced today that Frederic Scheer, Founder, Chairman and CEO, has been selected as 2010 BioPlastics Council Chair by The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) BioPlastics Council.

SPI’s BioPlastics Council, a special interest group focusing on the development of bioplastics as an integral part of the plastics industry nominated and approved Scheer unanimously because of his distinguished ability to serve the council based from his experience and bioplastics expertise concerning their principal goals for 2010.

The main agenda of the council this year is to continue its mission to educate the industry regarding bioplastics, focusing on clarifying “bioplastics-related” terms. He will also lead the council in their efforts to continue nurturing their close relationship with the USDA, focusing on supporting the BioPreferred Program. Like last year, Scheer and other members intend to go and speak with Senators on Capitol Hill. They will continue to establish synergy with other bio-organizers including, but not limited to, BioBased Products Coalition, BIO and European Bioplastics and aim to gain more exposure and visibility for the council overall.

With almost two decades of experience in bioplastics, Frederic Scheer is a recognized pioneer in this now-popular and growing industry. Scheer was involved in some of the most prominent events responsible for introducing and promoting bioplastics including the Sydney 2000 Olympics; Scheer not only won the exclusive distributorship for plasticware and waste bags, but was also crowned by Greenpeace as having participated at the “Greenest Games Ever.” He has been actively working to commercialize bioresins, spreading the word on the need for sustainable plastics and plans to continue in 2010 with the integration of algae into Cereplast’s bioplastics production process. “I am excited to embark on this new adventure, we have a lot on our agenda for this year with SPI,” said Scheer. “Bioplastic production is so essential for our future and I look forward to leading the council in the exciting ventures and projects that we foresee ahead.”

Scheer created the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) in 1999. This non-profit organization has quickly become the largest professional association in the world dedicated to promoting biodegradable and compostable products with more than 80 members. Scheer comments, “BPI has been the 'It' bioplastics success story of the last decade and I believe that the BioPlastics Council could become the 'it' story for this decade. With the support of SPI, the Bioplastics Council, who focuses primarily on 'Bioplastics at large,' including biodegradable, compostable and biobased materials- I feel, that we will serve as the prominent force in changing consumer perception of plastics and push bioplastics to the forefront of consumer demand throughout the next decade.”

Scheer further believes that all products should make sense socially and that bioplastics can transform that idea into a reality. It is his hope that the world will one day realize that oil is a limited natural resource and that it makes sense to consider using different feedstocks in plastic production.
