Zeroemissions will do the consultancy to obtain carbon credits from two biofuel plants in Brazil

The projected cogeneration system based on bagasse will avoid more than 2 and a half million tons of CO2 to the atmosphere.

Date: 02.04.2008
Zeroemissions and Abengoa Brazil have reached an agreement in which the first one will do the consultancy to obtain carbon credits from two biofuel plants located in Brazil, compromising as well to its later purchase.
The two facilities produce bioetanol from sugar cane and they will generate a minimum of 120.000CER/year. Both are located in the state of Sao Paulo, one of them, San Luis, in Pirassununga and the other one in São João da Boa Vista.
The projected system is based on cogeneration (heat and electric power production) from sugar cane waste. While processing the cane, molass is obtained to produce bioetanol and bagasse, raw material that can turn into electricity and heat. From the total forecast of the electrical production 70MW, 20MW will be use for self consumption and the rest will be exported to the grid. Doing this, there will be an improvement of energy efficiency on both plants and a minimum of 2.520.000 tons of CO2 equivalent will be avoided to the atmosphere during the 21 years of the facilities life expand. The reduction forecast it is always calculated based on the traditional scenario that in this case it would reject the bagasse obtaining electric power from the grid with the resulting impact of emissions on the final product.
San LuisŽ cogeneration is forecast to start in April, 2009 and San Joao in January, 2010.
Abengoa Bioenergy, AbengoaŽs affiliate purchased in 2007, 100% of the capital of the Dedini Agro group. Dedini Agro is one of the biggest companies of bioetanol and sugar of the Brazilian market, producing nowadays more than six million tons of cane a year.
The carbon credits obtain in both projects are called CER or Certified Emissions Reduction. These credits can be exchanged on the carbon credit market to face the reduction of emissions commitments assumed by the governments and transferred to the industrial sector. Therefore besides the undeniable environmental benefits, this initiative brings additional revenue to the projects and guarantees their viability.
Zeroemissions, AbengoaŽs company which provides global solutions for climate change through the promotion, development, and trade of carbon credits (CDM/JI), carbon offset services and innovation in technologies for greenhouse gasses reduction.
