At precisely 09:22 on the 21st October Eurofins' environmental laboratory based at Saverne in north-eastern France performed its one millionth test for asbestos. As an experienced and well-known laboratory within the field of asbestos fibre testing, Eurofins LEM has developed into a specialist at testing every type of potentially susceptible substance: building materials and construction products, air, soil, waste and water, each according to the analytical methods required in the various different member countries of the European Community.
Asbestos used to be used in the manufacture of a range of products, but principally as an insulator. In construction it was used from the 1950s to the 1980s due to its fire-resistance as well as its thermal and sound insulating properties. However, as has happened in many other countries, it was banned in France in 1997 as public authorities took the necessary steps to protect the population from the health hazards associated with it.
The testing of material samples is carried out prior to any house and land transactions, construction and demolition activity. The laboratory testing supports work carried out by inspectors, real estate environmental consultants, demolition contractors, asbestos removal experts, industrial enterprises and local municipalities which all face asbestos compliance tests. Eurofins uses all three major types of testing depending on national requirements: Polarised Light Microscopy (PLM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scan Electron Microscopy (SEM). The one millionth test was sampled by a real estate consultant from Villerest in France.
The subject remains topical in light of the recent communication from AFSSET (the French Agency for Health and Safety in the Environment and in the Workplace) recommending an amendment to the regulations in order to strengthen the protection of employees and the general population, currently contained in draft in the second version of the Plan Santé - Travail 2010-2014 (Health Plan - Work 2010-2014).
The Saverne laboratory was founded 20 years ago and the Eurofins Group has a second associated site based in Paris, which is dedicated to the analysis of fibres and dust, particularly in dust removal processes and airborne asbestos fibre counts. LEM joined the Eurofins Group in 2005 and the Saverne site now forms the flagship laboratory for Eurofins' environmental testing in France.
